Winter accessories I reach for when a beanie just isn’t enough

by Tina Lončar

November 14, 2025

Winter isn’t my favorite season. Especially not in Zagreb, when a grey blanket of smog hangs over the city for weeks, hovering stubbornly above the buildings and blocking out every trace of sunlight. Still, while I long for spring, there is one thing I do enjoy: the chance to finally wear layers and experiment with clothes – skirts and dresses over trousers, blazers over coats, scarves and caps at the same time. These are just some of the combinations in my winter lineup. As a big fan of accessories, I especially look forward to oversized scarves and all kinds of headwear – so here’s my list of favorites (or more accurately, every head accessory I’d rather wear than a basic wool beanie).

#1 A scarf wrapped around the head

A scarf wrapped around the head, or a knitted headscarf, is one of the chicest ways to replace a “regular” wool hat. This winter I’m especially excited about outfits with knitted scarves big enough to cover the shoulders and back, especially when they come in bright colours or with interesting patterns that instantly lift a winter look (which is often grey and a bit dull).

What’s also great is that you can play with the way you tie them to create a completely different vibe, under the chin in a babushka style, tucked under the hair or over it if you like a relaxed, boho mood.

#2 Fur hats

Fur hats are my favorite alternative to wool beanies. No matter how simple your outfit is, they instantly make it look special. Paired with a tailored coat and leather ankle boots, they create a striking, glamorous look, and they’re so warm that winter doesn’t stand a chance. If you’re after something more relaxed and playful, go for fur hats in bold colours. My favourite pieces are made of faux fur or come from long-ago finds in my go-to vintage shops in Zagreb.

#3 Headbands

A simple black headband adds a touch of retro charm. It girls of the sixties loved it, from Brigitte Bardot to Françoise Hardy and Twiggy, who turned it into their signature accessory and a visual marker of an entire era. Elastic headbands may not be the most practical choice for the coldest days, but what they will bring is a dose of chic. The good news is that they work with all kinds of looks – all you need to do is pair them with a nice set of earrings.

#4 Balaclavas

Wool balaclavas became super popular a few cold seasons ago. They were quickly labeled a controversial accessory, mostly because they resemble the ones worn by burglars, but fashion versions soon found their place among the trends, even if they still look a bit eccentric today. I have to admit, balaclavas aren’t my favourite winter accessory, but they definitely bring a bit of excitement to an otherwise dull winter wardrobe. And when it comes to warmth, they don’t disappoint.

#5 The scarf and cap combo

One thing I really enjoy about winter styling is that I can lean into layering and play with combinations I wouldn’t wear during the rest of the year. One of those is pairing a baseball cap with a scarf or with a silk square, which instantly looks interesting and draws attention. With these accessories, the rest of the outfit can stay completely basic. You can mix contrasting colors or match the cap and scarf in the same tone, depending on the look you want to create.
