Jon M. Chu’s Wicked, starring Cynthia Erivo (as Elphaba) and Ariana Grande (as Glinda), may not be out until late November, but hype for the movie-musical is already at an all-time high. “I’m so looking forward to everyone being able to see what we’ve created,” Erivo tells Vogue. “I’ve seen it already; I can’t wait to see how people experience it!” The simmering excitement for the film can be attributed, in part, to its two stars’ handful of appearances dressed in character—Erivo in shades of Elphaba green, and Grande in Glinda pinks. The method dressing continued last night at the 2024 Olympic Games opening ceremony, as well: Erivo and Grande shut down the red carpet in two Wicked-inspired ensembles.

Striking a pose in front of the Eiffel Tower, Erivo and Grande continued to build buzz for their upcoming project—and looked a stylish duo in the process. Given they were in the City of Light, they wanted to put a high-fashion stamp on their Wicked characters for the affair. “I love Paris. It’s one of my favorite places in the world,” says Erivo. “What’s better than having two of my favorite things, sports and fashion, blending together in such a massive way? And to be able to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympics! I couldn’t be more excited.”

What went into Erivo’s look, which channeled Elphaba realness? It was a custom Louis Vuitton ensemble in—what else?—emerald green. “We were inspired by Dominique Deveraux from Dynasty when finding references,” says Erivo, who was styled by Jason Bolden. “Her edge, her sophistication, her elegant Parisian style. It’s also been lovely to use the reference of a beautiful, strong Black woman.” Her favorite details were the accessories—including her Roberto Coin jewels and a dramatic brimmed chapeau. “When attending the last Vuitton show, we saw the hats going back and forth on the runway, and we decided to add something that was a bit more personal to me, which in this case is the hat,” says Erivo. “I love it! The shape and structure of the dress gives a throwback to the classic Parisian style, which felt appropriate given where we are. That’s something I love too!”

As for what other looks can we expect from Erivo as we fly toward Wicked’s premiere? You can count on many more stylish green getups to come—but in unexpected ways. “I’m diligently at work with my stylist, Jason Bolden, who I love with my whole heart,” says Erivo. “We have so much under our Wicked hat. Keep your eyes open to see what spells we weave.” She also promises diehard Wicked fans that the film will do the original Broadway musical justice: “Go. See. It!” Erivo urges.
