This year, a significant number of Oscar-nominated movies are available for viewing on streaming services and platforms, with some even accessible for free on YouTube and Vimeo.
Leading the nominations is “Oppenheimer” with a staggering 13 nominations, followed by “Poor Things” with 11 nominations, “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 10 nominations, and “Barbie” with 8. These four movies have definitively dominated cinemas this year: sparking numerous controversies, criticisms, comparisons, and debates, and with the announcement of “Barbie” nominations the movie’s viewership gained second wind long after its theatrical run had concluded.
The 96th Oscars will once again be hosted by TV host Jimmy Kimmel, with the ceremony taking place at the Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood, broadcast on the ABC network in the USA. In Croatia, it can be followed live on HTV on the night from Sunday, March 10, to Monday, March 11, at midnight CET.
“Oppenheimer,” nominated in the most categories, including all the major ones, is available to watch on the SkyShowtime platform. The movie, inspired by the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer,” features Cillian Murphy as the “father of the atomic bomb,” alongside Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., and Florence Pugh.
Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, and Ramy Youssef star in “Poor Things,” a movie adapted from the book of the same name by Alasdair Gray. It starts as a comedy of the absurd before turning into an unconventional reflection on female autonomy. The movie is available for viewing on the Amazon Prime platform and Apple TV.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, and Robert De Niro lead in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Martin Scorsese’s latest movie, an adaptation of David Grann’s book about the Osage murders. They are joined by Jesse Plemons, John Lithgow, and Brendan Fraser. The movie can be watched on Apple TV.
“Barbie” caused the biggest stir this summer, and its “story” has continued to this day: from the movie and Barbiecore, to the music video for Ken’s song, and reactions to the nominations. Throughout, “Barbie” has simply not settled down. It is available on HBO Max.
“Maestro” marks Bradley Cooper’s second directorial effort. Although the movie may not have lived up to critical expectations, Carey Mulligan’s performance is one of the best of her career. The movie is available on Netflix.
“Anatomy of a Fall” is a movie in which Sandra Hüller once again excels. Following “Toni Erdmann,” Hüller has earned another Oscar nomination, with the movie garnering a total of five nominations, including Best Picture. The movie is available to watch on Apple TV and Amazon Prime.
Netflix leads as the platform with the highest number of this year’s nominated movies available for viewing, including “Society of the Snow,” “The After,” “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” “Rustin,” “Nyad,” “El Conde,” “American Symphony,” and “Nimona.”
While these may not have been the most talked-about movies of the season, they are worth watching, and having them all in one place seems to invite a couple of weekend binge-watching sessions. Alongside them, you can watch the movie “Past life” on Apple TV. The nominated movies “Invincible” and “Knight of Fortune” are available on Vimeo, while the documentaries “The Barber of Little Rock,” “Island in Between,” and “The Last Repair Shop” are available for free viewing on YouTube.
