The newest season of Stranger Things is a full-on love letter to the best of the ’80s

December 1, 2025

The small town of Hawkins, Indiana has been through a lot. Since 1983, when a young boy vanished, locals have faced creatures from a parallel world, unhinged scientists, government operatives, and now, after everything, they’re stuck in a military lockdown. It’s all part of the Stranger Things universe, a horror-tinged take on Reagan-era America that returns to Netflix this December with its final episodes, nine years after it began.

Although it’s officially season five, it’s really a direct continuation of season four. The main villain, Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), is still lurking in the Upside Down, that ashy underworld beneath Hawkins. Above ground, the crew is plotting how to take him down. Hopper (David Harbour) has even built a kind of dojo to train his adoptive daughter with telekinetic powers, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), giving her the skills she needs to defeat Vecna.

Once again, the season leans on great production design (proof that not every Netflix title has to look cheap) and clever musical choices, from Diana Ross to The Chordettes and Tiffany. Die-hard Stranger Things fans know that season four brought back major 80s hits like Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill,” Metallica’s “Master of Puppets,” and Musical Youth’s “Pass the Dutchie.” The first part of season five follows the same spirit with a similarly nostalgic soundtrack

“I especially love how ABBA’s Fernando fits the scene as Karen gets ready for her bath, building this quiet tension that makes the horror that follows even sharper,” says Nora Felder, the award-winning music supervisor behind Stranger Things.

As we get ready to say goodbye to Eleven, Mike, Will, Joyce, Hopper, and all the other beloved characters whose stories will reach their final moments on December 26 and 31, here’s the full soundtrack from season five, filled with songs that pull us right back into the unforgettable eighties.
