The dresses at the Wuthering Heights premiere look as if they had traveled straight from the 19th century

January 29, 2026

It has been clear for several months now that 2026 will be the year of historical dramas. Ruffles on ball gowns, elegant tea parties, glamorous balls, yearning… it’s impossible not to love these dramatic and often very extreme portrayals of the past. Leading the trend are undoubtedly Bridgerton, with its fourth season releasing today, and of course Wuthering Heights in director Emerald Fennell’s adaptation, one of the most anticipated films of the year. Today, the world premiere of this exciting film took place in Los Angeles, and the actors on the red carpet—or rather the glossy red floor we’ve already seen in the film’s trailer—left no one indifferent.

The truth is that the film relies on its stars in the leading roles, Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, actors who, seemingly without any effort, always leave us breathless. However, there is something particularly captivating about their latest looks, which lean, just slightly, on method dressing with classic opulent silhouettes infused with darker elements. Jacob Elordi, as usual, opted for a simple Bottega Veneta suit, to which I can only say: if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. Yet the subtle belt under the jacket, reminiscent of those worn by officers in the early 19th century, hinted that he had learned a thing or two about method dressing from his colleague.

It is a reinterpretation of a creation that was presented just a few days ago in Paris at the Schiaparelli Spring 2026 couture show. She paired this dreamy piece with a necklace that once belonged to Elizabeth Taylor, the legendary Taj Mahal diamond necklace. It is the necklace Taylor received as a gift from Richard Burton, featuring a heart-shaped pendant engraved with Indian poetry. As Charli XCX says, everything is romantic.

And speaking of Charli XCX, the star took a break from promoting her own film The Moment and also appeared on the red carpet as an artist who contributed to the intriguing soundtrack. In that spirit, she swapped her signature simple white tees for a lavish ball gown, a custom-made Vivienne Westwood creation. Made from voluminous layers of beige tulle, this is a dress we certainly wouldn’t have seen in the early 19th century, but judging by the costume design of Wuthering Heights, it would fit perfectly in the new film.

As far as I’m concerned, with this premiere the actors (and Charli!) achieved exactly what they needed to—they made me even more eager to go to the cinema to see the film. Because if it’s even half as magnificent as the looks of the lead stars, it will be worth watching. Until then, it seems like the perfect time to read Wuthering Heights again.
