I found an idyllic Adriatic destination for holiday celebrations and a winter escape

I often think of that line by Oliver: You have to believe in something. I believe in the sea. This year, whenever every thought faded and desire scattered, without many words or much thinking, I went to what I believe in most: the sea. It began with Isadora Duncan’s room in one of those old villas on the Adriatic coast where I spent the summer, and which she wrote about in her memoirs. Gazing at the palm trees outside her window, which inspired the recognizable movements of arms, hands and fingers on stage, I wished to find my own refuge for inspiration. I searched and searched, tearing every possible extra day from everyday life for the drifting of thoughts, soul and body, from island to island, from bay to bay, until this winter (and winters by the sea are especially magical) I discovered One&Only Portonovi as my singular place of contemplation.
