This season, everyone’s talking about the jacket that ruled the nineties, so of course I had to try it myself

This time of year always stirs up a very specific kind of nostalgia in me. Warm, lazy mornings with cartoons, the final ballet rehearsals before the annual show, snowy adventures during winter break, New Year’s Eve with the whole family gathered: my grandfather dancing the twist before he (not-so) unexpectedly turns into Santa at midnight, and by morning everything feels like a dream. Soft, sparkling, endless. Our games meant freedom, our togetherness was a small nest of safety, comic books and youth magazines shaped our imagination, and the simplicity of life left no room for worry. In every childhood photo, my friends and I are wearing MONT jackets. Mine is green, three sizes too big, down to my knees, very clearly and silently my brother’s. When I’d ask, almost childishly offended, why that was the case, I’d get the usual answer that they were always “passed down” (even though my brother in that same photo is wearing a brand-new one). That symbol of growing up, freedom and youthful defiance followed us everywhere, even when it didn’t quite match the more elegant outfits for birthday parties. It was practical, comfortable and irreplaceable. A little badge of belonging and collective spirit. We all wore them on school trips, ski camps, and sports activities, and they reflected a now-forgotten way of life in which experiences, play and friendship carried the most value.

Because of all that, no one was happier than me to see MONT jackets return in full force in 2025. I finally get to choose one that’s just mine. Especially now that this symbol of childhood comes in a completely refreshed, upgraded and modernized MONT RE-BORN edition, still recognizably warm, soft and reliable. If we once used them to climb actual mountain peaks, today we can wear them to fashion shows and other glamorous events (have you noticed all the A-listers wrapped in quilt-like jackets in the front rows?).

The big puffer comeback really started in 2016, when Demna Gvasalia introduced his new oversized Balenciaga version. From there, the runways of every major fashion capital followed with their own takes, from Louis Vuitton to Gucci and Loewe. The silhouette that now feels like a blend of puffer and bomber quickly became a go-to for stars like Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber and Bella Hadid in their off-duty looks. And once the pandemic pushed the gorpcore wave (outdoor wear on city streets) into full swing, puffers slipped straight back into the mainstream.

Alongside the modern, cropped puffers in black and white for both women and men (my personal favourite is the one with the velvet finish), this season’s MONT jackets also come in a more classic, longer cut for extra comfort, proving that fashion and function can meet in a single piece. There are midweight and heavyweight versions as well, all built around practicality: water-resistant materials, wind protection and hoods designed to handle whatever the weather throws your way.

The cuts are modular and convertible, designed to offer multiple functions in one, and the materials are durable, resilient and long-lasting, filled with 90 percent goose down to extend the jacket’s lifespan and carry on the tradition of passing it down from one generation to the next. Because MONT is much more than a piece of clothing. It’s a memory that follows you everywhere, and this new chapter of the brand lets that nostalgic story keep going.

TIPS & TRICKS: how to style a puffer jacket

1.A monochrome look always elevates the outfit

A puffer in the same shade as your trousers or sneakers instantly looks cleaner and more refined. Neutral palettes (cream, olive, graphite grey) are a foolproof choice.

2.Play with proportions

Pair a voluminous puffer with a thoughtfully balanced bottom: balloon denim, cargo styles or stacked jeans prevent the “thin-legs effect” and keep the silhouette looking grounded and intentional.

3.The Carrie Bradshaw moment

For inspiration, think of Carrie strolling through New York in her oversized puffer coat, paired with XXL sunglasses and heeled boots. Proof that a puffer can be effortlessly timeless and chic.

4.Don’t forget the base – a sleek foundation matters

The fail-safe style formula goes like this: a knitted turtleneck, leather trousers, sharp ankle boots, a structured bag and a puffer jacket. The contrast of textures creates a strong, polished look, especially for the office.

P.S. If the puffer is extra warm and heavily filled, keep the base layer thin and simple. It maintains your natural lines and keeps the outfit from feeling too bulky.
