Cvit Happens brings us 7 ideas for decorating a Christmas table that will delight traditionalists

Tina Kovačićek

The festive table has long been more than just a gathering point in the home. It is a place where memories are revisited and new ones are made, where we get the rare chance to bring all our loved ones together at once and we know how meaningful those moments are. With care and thoughtful ideas, the holiday table becomes a stage for tradition (serve them this delicious cake!), details, and the warmth we share with those closest to us. A “stage for experiences that linger,” as Antun Bauer from Cvit Happens poetically puts it, with whom we developed ideas for this Christmas tablescape.

At the very mention of classic Christmas table styling, Antun immediately suggested a Ralph Lauren–inspired tablescape rooted in tradition, warm tones, and timeless details. That was exactly the direction we had in mind while searching for inspiration for a festive table that respects well-loved customs while elevating them with fresh ideas. The result Cvit Happens presents and recommends is a table that will delight traditionalists while introducing a new level of elegance to the holiday atmosphere. Here are seven steps to creating a Christmas table in an elegant, classic style.

1. A return to the ’90s: go treasure hunting in the attic

When it comes to the holidays, the rule of “less is more” no longer applies. This is the moment to rediscover the beauty of old porcelain sets, crystal glasses with intricately refined designs, and decorations passed down from generation to generation. Setting the table with authentic cutlery and tableware creates more than just a charming final look. It evokes memories of another time and the cherished moments once shared with those we love most.

2. An homage to the plaid pattern

Another beloved motif of the ’90s makes a return, now reimagined as a sophisticated, cosy pattern that brings structure and rhythm to the table. By pairing a red-and-green tartan tablecloth with complementary elements in deep red tones, candles, flowers, and layered textiles, we introduce warmth into the home and turn the dining room into a true gathering place for friends. Can you picture a holiday movie scene without a hint of plaid? Hardly.

3. Baking as a ritual

Spending quality time with family often means preparing and baking the season’s most delicious treats together. A simple idea, yet a powerful one, it instantly turns into a small family ritual. Gingerbread cookies, the indispensable bundt cake, winter fruits like oranges and pomegranates… are you with us? Once again, it all comes back to red. We value time spent in the kitchen with the people we love, even more so when the results of that shared effort are presented on the table on elegant cake stands. This is your personal dessert-buffet moment.

4. Amaryllis and red roses: a timeless floral classic

The idea is simple: elegant, striking, and forever in style. With their grand blooms, amaryllis bring a sense of quiet luxury, while red roses add a dramatic, sensual note. Pairing them with Christmas wreaths on the table and hanging throughout the room creates a warmth rivaled only by a fully decorated Christmas tree.

5. Name cards for a personalised touch of festivity

A small detail with a big impact. Personalised place cards give the table a sense of exclusivity, as if guests have arrived at a private dinner in a boutique hotel. One thing not to forget: handwritten names make the gesture feel even more personal. Let every guest at your table feel that this is a special occasion, created just for them.

6. A small personal gift at each place setting is a gesture to remember

The little details placed next to each name card or plate create a feeling of generosity and abundance. With the thought that you know what your guests love or what might delight them, add a small, considered token of appreciation. Think napkin rings shaped like Christmas trees, bears, or the iconic holiday candy cane.

7. An Advent wreath as an elegant table centerpiece

We have nothing against hanging a wreath on the front door, but this Advent symbol deserves a place throughout the dining room as well, or even more than one. It returns to centre stage as a powerful decorative element, both on the wall and on the table. Choose natural materials such as fir and cypress, and mix candles of different heights for a sculptural effect. This way, the table takes on the leading role, with everything else falling into a thoughtful, cohesive whole.
