If you’ve already devolved into a mince pie, mulled wine and mini Malteser fugue state – and if you’re determined to figure out how to eat the requisite amount of protein in 2026 – then bookmark this for the new year. Hailey Bieber has a solution. Posting to her 56 million Instagram followers, Bieber shared a macro-friendly meal that, she says, has become her “hyperfixation”.
@haileybieber
Two burger patties housed in sweet potato “buns” – really just sliced and baked sweet potatoes on the top and bottom – with a dash of burger sauce and tomatoes and pickles on the side. From a macronutrient perspective, it’s almost perfect. There’s protein and fat in the beef burger, fibre and slow-release carbohydrates in the sweet potatoes, fermented brine on the pickles, and phytonutrients and antioxidants from the sliced tomato.
While the exact protein grammage is unknown, a typical homemade beef burger could contain anywhere between 20 and 35 grams of protein – almost exactly the recommended amount to aim for at each meal and snack. This is because protein helps with balancing blood sugar, increasing feelings of fullness, muscle growth and repair, and more sustained energy throughout the day.
Ask most nutrition experts and they’ll tell you the key to a more balanced diet – one where you achieve your protein and fibre goals, along with micronutrients – is not to cut things out but to try and add where possible. Here, Bieber’s shown that a typical burger can be souped up to include the flavours you love, just in a new format.
Obviously, there’s nothing wrong with having a burger with a traditional bun and chips (or as she would say, fries) on the side, but this is a smart way to hit your nutrition goals without sacrificing the meals you love. Thanks, Mrs B.
