Goodbye to tiny bags: We finally carry models that fit everything. Everything!

Tina Lončar

February 26, 2024

Although we love a story wrapped in the imagination that radiates fashion, we are always surprised by how poetic completely everyday and ordinary things can look. The bag that we grab in a hurry on the way out, and which hides all our little things, even those that we completely forgot about, is one of those things, everyday, practical, common to most of us… Real.

No, as much as we like to be dramatic, the miniature bags still didn’t ring a bell. They are still there in the entire galaxy of models. Fashion houses remained faithful to them this warm season as well, but what attracted attention on the catwalks of fashion weeks in fashion metropolises were large (sometimes really large) models from which, somewhat caricaturing reality, all kinds of things fell out, from bunches of keys, to spare salonki to a bouquet of dried flowers. Whether it was a silent tribute to the fashion icon Jane Birkin, who always charmingly packed everything from groceries to mirrors in her distinctive woven baskets, we don’t know. But the runways seemed more real than ever before, with huge bags crammed with them. It was a moment we longed for, something we could identify with. As much as we love the dose of chic that miniature bags give to styling, most of the time they are still impractical, and what we want to accompany us through our sometimes very hectic days are bags in which we can store everything we might need. And what probably won’t.

Fashion houses have collections for spring/summer 2024. presented a whole series of supersize models, and showed how much they really fit in a rather unusual way. Normally filled with paper and cardboard, the bags shone on the runways, carrying items that we often carry in them. No matter how absurd they seem. Hermès presented its model “decorated” with a substantial bouquet of dried wildflowers, a woven bag signed by Bottega Veneta contained everything, from newspapers to a shirt, and the elegant Miu Miu model also contained several pairs of shoes. It was a wonderful ode to the chaos of everyday life, and because of that, incredibly charming. Quite enough to understand how important the biggest bag we have in our closet is to us.
