The heirloom piece making a surprisingly chic comeback this season

December 11, 2025

Everything, as so often happens, began with Rihanna. The pop icon and originator of countless trends revealed her third pregnancy just before this year’s Met Gala in May, appearing drenched in a grey Miu Miu set paired with the brand’s signature knee socks. In her hand she carried a fur stole, an accessory that had not returned to mainstream fashion in years, perhaps even decades.

One of the greatest fashion visionaries of our time is responsible for the comeback of this glamorous and slightly retro accessory. Miuccia Prada opened the Miu Miu fall winter 2025 show with a look in which the fur stole took centre stage as the key accessory. Throughout the presentation, the stoles were worn in two ways: draped over the elbow like a handbag or elegantly placed around the neck, often adorned with bold gold brooches. Bras, brooches and fur are typical symbols of femininity. But the real question is what of that we even retain today. Does femininity have any meaning or function in such a dangerous moment. In a time of war, Prada asked pointedly in her conversation with Vogue Runway after the show. Only a few months later, the trends showed that bras, brooches and fur, as symbols of femininity, were once again under the spotlight. And Miu Miu, as one of the most important brands of today, along with Rihanna as an eternal trendsetter, has certainly contributed to that rise in popularity.

As an essential accessory in the wardrobes of the wealthy who wanted to emulate nobility, the fur stole began gaining popularity in the early twentieth century, reaching its peak between the twenties and the fifties. Thanks to the stars of Hollywood’s golden era, it became a symbol of sophistication and glamour, but animal rights activism soon gave it the label of an accessory that was not only unethical but also very démodé. Like relics of the past, vintage fur stoles hung untouched in closets for years, waiting for their moment to shine again. When faux fur technology advanced, a moment arrived in which the fur stole could return to the whimsical roads of fashion trends, though not in the form our grandmothers wore (we all know what those pieces looked like), but in modern and contemporary versions.

Fur stoles flooded the runways for the cold season and appeared in collections by brands such as Toteme, Simone Rocha, Prada and Marine Serre, elevating outfits of various styles. The trend soon spilled onto the streets of fashion capitals, becoming one of the most coveted accessories of the winter.

How to wear a fur stole this winter

Beyond their appearance and materials, the way we wear fur stoles today also sets them apart. Unlike the past, when they adorned elegant coats paired with classic pumps and refined gloves, completing a ladylike look with a clear hint of status, fur stoles are now worn much more nonchalantly. They are part of evening and sophisticated outfits, but also everyday, eclectic and relaxed combinations, paired with pieces older generations would never have considered. Judging by street style photos from major fashion weeks, this winter they are worn with old school tracksuits, leather coats in bold shades, jeans, oversized jackets and more. There are no rules for combining them. A bonus is that the stole is not only an aesthetic accessory that gives an outfit its finishing touch. Unless worn simply draped over the arm, we can at least count on finally being warm.
