The great cosmic guide to crystals for every zodiac sign

My friends always say that I am the least complicated person when it comes to buying gifts, and for my last birthday I received quite a few little treasures. Two scented candles, a couple of face masks, incense and scented sticks in magical packaging, and black obsidian. A powerful crystal associated with Scorpios, said to help release negativity and emotional overload, while encouraging transformation and personal growth.
Crystals have been attracting me for quite some time now, both because of my inclination toward a more spiritual, read magical, lifestyle and because I am a passionate lover of good statement jewelry. For me, Judith Hall summed up crystals best in her book The Little Book of Crystals, where she says that they “have a stable and unchanging energy pattern, each with a unique frequency and energy field or resonance,” which gives them their special properties. As a result, they “act like tuning forks” and help bring “harmony into the very unstable energy field of the human body.”
In addition to obsidian, I now have quite a nice collection of crystals: rose quartz when I feel that I am not taking enough care of myself, amethyst on my bedside table for calming and better sleep, and opal to encourage intuition and luck, which I most often just throw into my bag when a long and demanding day awaits me. That is why I thought how wonderful it would be in the coming year to gift all my friends a crystal based on their birth month or astrological sign. Of course, to better understand where this practice comes from, I turned to Mojca Zove, the owner of the brand and shop Your Soul Time, who has seriously delved into the historical development and contemporary interpretation of “birthstones.”

As Mojca explained to me, the association of crystals with astrological signs actually dates back to the 4th century AD, when, in the Greek and Roman world under Egyptian influence, people wrote about the connection between planets and crystals. They believed that planets and crystals held special meanings and connections, and they began to apply these connections in practice. Each planet was assigned a crystal or stone, along with instructions on how to engrave and use these stones for spiritual purposes. These associations largely stemmed from the belief that each planet has its own characteristics and forces that it emits and through which it influences us, and these were linked to the characteristics of semi precious stones. For example, the red ruby was associated with fire and the sun. Over the centuries, planets began to be linked to astrological signs, and as a result each astrological sign also received its own crystal, which was essentially tied to that planet. Leo is ruled by the Sun, and the crystal of the Sun is ruby. Taurus is ruled by Venus, Venus’s crystal is emerald, therefore Taurus’s crystal is emerald. Later, in medieval Europe, the practice of wearing different crystals according to the month of the year became common. In May, people wore emeralds, and in July, rubies. In the 19th century, gifting jewelry according to birth month became a popular trend.

In the 1930s, due to the growing practice of assigning multiple stones to one sign and the confusion that followed, a standardized list of birthstones was established and has been preserved to this day. The official standardized list is as follows: January: garnet; February: amethyst; March: aquamarine; April: diamond; May: emerald; June: pearl, moonstone, alexandrite; July: ruby; August: peridot, spinel; September: sapphire; October: opal, tourmaline; November: citrine, topaz; December: turquoise, tanzanite, zircon.
A crystal linked to a sign or birth month, as Mojca explained, is meant to emphasize the qualities of a person with that sign, helping them step more fully into their role while balancing other traits. “If I explain this with the example of Pisces, who are extremely open, emotional and sensitive to their surroundings, their crystal according to the standardized list is amethyst or aquamarine, depending on the birth month, which calm and help them find inner silence that Pisces quickly lose due to their sensitivity.” She also added that at Your Soul Time they only partially rely on birthstones, and when choosing the “right” crystal for oneself they encourage listening to one’s own intuition.
