7 funky ideas for the bold who want a different kind of Christmas table

Tina Kovačićek

Revisiting this year’s ideas for festive table settings, I found myself thinking that Cvit Happens, in a recently published editorial, delivered a classic Christmas table in the most beautiful way possible. With just the right touch of plaid we’ve been missing (which works brilliantly in fashion too, thanks Sonja for that tip), plenty of red and green, and details that truly charm the table. And let’s not forget how, from the very first photograph, you can almost smell a homemade kuglof (try Modla’s recipe for something a little different) — an essential part of any Christmas spread.

But what if this year we set classic aside and dare to go somewhere we’ve never been before when it comes to the Christmas table? Antun Bauer from Cvit Happens had an answer for that too. “Let your table be the most colourful, most relaxed and most joyful Christmas table of the season,” Antun decided, heading straight into a funky direction of styling, details and a full-on firework of colours. Seven bold ideas on how to pull it all together await you below.

Each guest brings their favourite Christmas ornament. Let the table become a gallery of personal stories

A dance of colour

Minimalism is officially cancelled this season. If you’re torn between two colours, take both, especially vibrant shades of turquoise, pink, yellow and red. Add metallic shine, fluorescent accents and glossy finishes. Eclectic tones bring energy and visual movement, turning the table into a scene that celebrates joy, spontaneity and festive optimism.

This year, we’re forgetting about perfectly coordinated decorations and opting for creative chaos instead. Ask each guest to bring along their favourite Christmas ornament to the festive gathering. A retro glass bauble, a handmade piece, a DIY star kept since childhood. The table turns into an eclectic exhibition of stories, memories and personal styles. It’s not just décor, it’s the opening line of every good conversation.

Shared chaos always comes before stylistic perfection

A funky approach means letting go of strict rules. Mix different chairs, don’t fuss over the tablecloth, let it fall naturally, add garlands, bring in colourful candles and combine metal and glass tableware. Holiday magic begins the moment we consciously stop chasing perfection. Authenticity is very much in fashion.

We don’t overthink it. We decorate with everything we love and have at hand

A robot, an ice cream, a teddy bear, a reindeer with feathers around its neck. Glass beads, oversized sequins, colourful ornaments. Everything goes. Whatever makes you smile deserves a place on the table. Mismatched tableware, candles, little figurines. More is more. We’re stepping away from seriousness and bringing back a sense of childlike play as a festive ritual.

Choose a special ornament for each guest that captures their personality

A fun way to replace traditional place cards. Do you have a friend who’s obsessed with cars? A cousin who swears ice cream is the ultimate dessert? Or someone close to you who still sleeps with a childhood teddy bear? Turn these playful, personal details into a small parade of quirks, with ornaments that gently and humorously reflect each guest’s character. The choice is yours and so is the imagination. Nothing is over the top. Everything is allowed.

Avoid red and classic florals. Gloriosa is the wow choice

Red roses and poinsettias are sitting this one out. A funky table calls for unexpected heroes, and gloriosa fits the brief perfectly. It brings a sense of tropical drama and elevated, high-end energy. There’s no need to balance it out. Pair it with exotic greenery or unusual branches for a fresh, unpredictable look.

Let the centrepiece be as bold, wild and daring as possible

Can’t settle on just one? Go for something shiny, kitsch and unapologetically colourful. Choose a centrepiece that sparks questions and starts conversations. Let it be a little crazy. A vintage toy in kaleidoscopic shades, an improvised arrangement, a pile of vintage ornaments. The more unusual, the better. The table becomes an art project that isn’t looking for meaning, only for joy.
