Berlin sticks to black this winter, but keeps it far from boring

by Tina Lončar

After the usually cheerful, eclectic and colorful fashion on the streets of Copenhagen, the spotlight moved to Berlin, where the days from January 30 to February 2 were reserved for fashion week. If we follow the weather forecast, and we do, we know that the meteorological conditions are not significantly different from those in the Danish capital. Fashion insiders in Berlin were greeted by snow and rather low winter temperatures, but Berliners will tell you, if you complain, that it is nothing more than “just another harsh Berlin winter.”

Aside from the typical winter, one that many would surely give up if they could, Berlin has not given up this season either on its recognizable stylistic signature, the color black. Although a myth still circulates in the corridors that it is impossible to get into Berghain if you are not wearing black, which I can responsibly claim is not true, the streets continue to pay homage to their favorite “non-color.” Only a handful of fashion insiders dared to resist the norms and embrace colorful, eclectic maximalism, but most remained faithful to black. That, however, does not mean that everyone was boring or predictable, Berlin has mastered the art of making black interesting. From avant-garde cuts that instantly draw attention, through bold layering, to statement and unexpected accessories, we saw it all on the streets of Berlin during fashion week. If Berlin street style can teach us anything, it is this small lesson: if you want a black outfit not to be boring, forget restraint and shyness.
