For a while now, social media has been filled with a trend where it girls and trendsetters share lists of things they consider extremely chic. These usually include elegant dresses, unusual hairstyles, and trendy manicures. Allow me to add something very specific that I believe only the chicest girls can truly pull off: mixing gold and silver jewelry. Yes, I am talking about a styling choice that breaks the long-standing rule that was drilled into me from childhood, the one that says you should never mix metals. But when a girl appeared in front of me at an event recently, wearing a stack of gold and silver bracelets and rings, it took my breath away. And you know that feeling when you see someone who radiates pure aesthetic confidence. I simply had to find out her secret for wearing mixed metals so effortlessly and looking incredibly chic, so that I could work up the courage to experiment with my own accessories.
I have always gravitated toward silver jewelry, mostly because it felt cooler to me when I was a teenager, and I am not great at changing my habits. But when the obsession with undertones and seasonal color analysis took over the internet, I learned what is probably the worst news for someone with a Libra Moon. With a neutral undertone, both gold and silver suit me. How was I supposed to choose then? Should I continue wearing only silver, or finally give gold a try, especially since I have collected a beautiful selection of vintage pieces over the years? Trendsetters showed me the solution. I would start mixing gold and silver jewelry. Here are the tricks I learned to make the combination look chic rather than chaotic.
In the beginning, mixing metals can feel complicated. It took me a long time to silence the little voice insisting that this approach to styling was wrong. That is why I think the best way to start is with the jewelry you already wear every day. For me, that is silver. Then slowly add subtle contrasting details. One way to do this is with pieces already designed in two tones. This allows you to create an intriguing and chic look without stepping too far out of your comfort zone.
Sometimes full maximalism is the easiest way to make this trend look chic and elegant. Jewelry already adorned with gemstones is easier to combine with metal in a different color. In fact, gold decorated with diamonds pairs beautifully with silver, since the stones add a cool tone to the gold that looks irresistible next to silver.
If stacking jewelry is not your style, there is another way to mix gold and silver. I like to think of it as block mixing, where you choose to wear earrings and necklaces in one color, and bracelets and rings in another. This is probably the simplest way to mix metals, and you really cannot go wrong with it.

Since I love rings and always wear at least five, it will not surprise you that this is my favorite way to mix gold and silver. Rings are easy to stack, you only need to make sure not to place two thick ones side by side so that your hands stay comfortable. That also makes stacking different metals quite simple. Combine two thin rings, one gold and one silver, on the same finger, wear different colors on different fingers, or dedicate one hand to gold and the other to silver. There are countless options and all of them look incredibly cool.
