5 Ways to Style Denim This Autumn

If you were to peek into my closet, you would realize that my relationship with denim is deep and personal. It might sound like I’m exaggerating or romanticizing this, otherwise, very “unromantic” material, but I truly believe that, like good wine, denim only gets better. For me, it has been the foundation of my wardrobe and personal style ever since, in my late teenage days, I learned about the persona and fashion legacy of Jane Birkin, and then her adopted compatriots and contemporaries. Later, on the inevitable path of style research that begins with Jane Birkin, I also came to Alexa Chung, who, with her choices, finally convinced me that denim is, truly, supreme and unsurpassed (no matter what fashion elitists say about it). Every autumn, I face the same, sweet challenge: how to make something so familiar and beloved feel fresh, new, and unexpected?
The answer, as always, lies in reinterpreting classics and experimenting. One of the reasons I became aware of my love for denim and the possibilities it offers was the new Liu Jo collection, which celebrates denim not as a work uniform, but as an instrument for expressing sensuality and elegance. These are five key narratives that, I am sure, will help you fall in love with your favorite pair of jeans all over again.

Once a fashion taboo, the combination of denim on denim, famously known as the “Canadian tuxedo,” is today, paradoxically, an expression of confidence. The trick, however, lies in a smart approach when combining proportions and shades. In short, forget about matching! The beauty is in the contrast. Liu Jo pieces, like jeans paired with a maxi denim bomber jacket or a cropped version with suede details, can be one way to combine multiple denim pieces. The key is for one piece to be dominant, creating a silhouette that is both relaxed and powerful.

Who says denim can’t be elegant? As we’ve already said, this season, the most interesting combinations are born from a clash of opposites. The raw, authentic nature of denim is perfectly balanced when paired with unexpectedly soft and feminine cuts and materials. Liu Jo’s jeans models with rhinestones best illustrate this idea. You can take this concept to the next level by throwing a maxi denim bomber jacket over a lace skirt. The result is an outfit that is simultaneously strong and romantic, perfect for evening occasions that don’t require a strict dress code.

Long gone are the days when denim was reserved only for casual weekend strolls. Today, this material is part of the new business uniform for the modern woman who moves between different environments. The secret is in combining it with sharp, tailored pieces. Liu Jo straight-leg jeans, in a darker shade without faded details, become the perfect base, which you can pair with an elegant knitted vest and a blazer. This combination retains a dose of formality but introduces an element of ease and personal style that a classic suit often doesn’t allow.

Seventies-inspired silhouettes have been present on the runways for some time now and, especially, among lovers of vintage pieces who find an inexhaustible source of inspiration in this particular decade. You’ll agree that nothing evokes the ’70s quite like flare-cut jeans. Liu Jo brings a high-waisted model whose legs flare out and almost touch the ground, which raises the question – how to wear this dramatic silhouette? The key, again, is in balance and contrast. Wear them with pieces that are shorter and follow the body line, like a fitted turtleneck or a cropped denim jacket. This way, the legs visually appear longer, and the entire figure gains elegance.

Autumn is synonymous with layering, and denim is ideal for such experiments. A denim mini skirt with pleats combines perfectly with bulky turtleneck sweaters. Add high boots and a long coat to that, and the result will be an outfit that is both trendy, striking, and functional. It’s a play on textures and lengths, where denim serves as the solid foundation around which the entire story is built.
